Pro:Four: Posters Ideas
Again using the internet and sources at the Library here in Magee, I examined what was currently fashionable for such posters. This then involved me going away and working on what I had seen. This also included me taking some images of the internet, transferring them into photo-shop and with some adaptations, I created posters to suit the look I wanted to achieve. I liked to use the various images of people from different cultures throughout the world. Again I wanted to emphasis brightness in the posters as opposed to dark, the brightness representing hope for the future.
Also I wanted to insert a very brief piece of typeography to clearly depict what the poster was about. The logo will be placed on the bottom right hand side.
Pro:Four: Logo Ideas
I went through the process of sketching various ideas to ascertain what would actually work best for my project. I came up with the idea of a logo that would represent two people standing face to face, each with a hand raised and the palms touching. This would represent the coming together of different cultures. One individual would be blue and, the other green. The words popular peace will run through the image. I have not yet decided on the final resolution. I have given some consideration to my choice of letter colouring and I would prefer something bright but have not yet completely decided on this.

Pro: Three "Early memory" Final.
I initially filmed my Uncle James presenting information about his memories of school and growing up as a deaf student and sign language user, however, when it came to transferring the video information to sketch format, this proved difficult due to the amount of information provided.
I then had to re-interview by Uncle via video format, this time concentrating on his memories of childhood only. I found the story to be very emotive and interesting. I then proceeded to develop my sketches for the animation. Initially what I did was sketch a story board to provide a guideline for the animation. Then, I scanned each sketch into Photoshop, obviously in rotation to provide further structure. I used a light box whilst sketching to allow me to capture the detail required.
Chapter One
My initial sketch shows a representation of my Uncle James holding a plaque-card with his name on it, I used this sketch as an introduction. The story basically portrays my Uncle’s experience entering into a school for the deaf in Dublin and the enormity of this experience for a small child standing in front of, and looking at, a huge old school. Whilst standing there he is approached by a priest, older in years, and looking very stern. This priest orders James to follow him.
James, a small child, is given no assistance with his luggage, he is led up a winding staircase where his suitcase falls open and its contents are strewn everywhere.
Chapter Two
It was dark outside and when James and some of his new friends ventured out. Inside the school grounds was a orchard and a priests’ graveyard. The boys had to go through the grave yard and over a wall, to reach an apple orchard. Hungry, they proceeded to eat the apples. While they were there, James seen something moving out of the corner of his eye. It was two lights moving up and down, frightened, he thought he was seeing a ghost. He immediately dropped the apples and jumped over the wall. He ran as quickly as he could back to the school where he met another friend. He told what had happened to his friend, saying how he had seen a ghost and this made him drop the apples. His friend did not believe his story, he said there was no such thing as ghosts.
Chapter Three
James was very interested in tailoring. He spent a lot of time sewing clothes, which led him to be teased for this pastime, as the rest of the boys seen it as a woman’s role. As a result of this, he decided to try another hobby. Subsequently, started to learn how to fix boots and unfortunately this led to numerous thumb injuries, when he would miss the boot and hit his thumb.
Chapter Four
James was in the dinner hall eating his food which was not very nice. He dropped some of his food onto the floor and thought no-one had seen this, so just left it there. A Priest was coming along with a big jug of orange to give all the boys a drink. As he marched along the room, he didn’t see the dropped food and slipped on it. He landed on the floor with the orange over him . The boys witnessing this, laughed loudly, making the priest even more furious. He demanded to know who dropped the food. He reached for a boy by the collar and threatened to hit him. Another priest intervened to calm the situation. James thought the situation very funny and continued to laugh.
The End.
Pro: Three "Early memory" (Ideas)
I met my Uncle James and I held an interview with him to recall his past memories of growing up as a deaf individual. I found his story very interesting, issues around his childhood and education were very interesting and not always positive. His story progressed to him looking for work and his experiences of growing into adulthood.
He also spoke of his experiences of taking part in the Bloody Sunday March. From this he told me how he went on to meet his wife and how they went on to have four children.
I found the story very interesting and began doing stretches to establish how I could present it in animation. My first idea is to show a black dot on a white background, accompanied with music . As the black dot opens out, it will move to become just a black outer line, with a white centre and will fill the screen. In the centre, the person telling the story will become apparent. No voice will appear on the film, sign language will tell the story.
When the story finishes the screen will reverse its opening action and revert to a full black dot again. It will reopen in the same way as before, with a full white screen developing, this allowing the account of later experiences to be relayed.
I will present this work, by the use of a black marker, no colour and all sketches will be black and white. I have not decided on whether I will use Stop Motion or Photo Shop in this project yet.
My second idea of how to complete this project is by using Stop Motion. I would have a black board and then I would clip out the scenes in white. Each time I would make a movement I would take a photograph. I will use a mixture of colours, black, white and red to depict the story of Bloody Sunday. The red, being used to depict the dramatics of the day.
My third idea will begin with a crumpled up white piece of paper which will slowly open to reveal the animated characters. The last scene will end with the paper again becoming crumpled and ripped up, moving around the scene. The shredded paper will be used to highlight his return to Derry, and his realisation that while he has been aware unrest has developed within the province.
The crumpled piece of paper will now disappear and return as a whole new sheet of white paper, this will signify the further development of his life, his marriage and subsequent birth of children. The process used in this activity will again be photo-shop or stop motion.
My fourth idea involves a white background, with 2 lots paper ripped and rolled. The animation is covered in one roll paper and as it un-roles, the story will begin. On one side the animation will develop and on the other side, the text will un-role.
The next scene will be of a piece of paper which will dramatically rip unevenly on the screen, this will depict the notion that something devastating has happened.
At each stage of the story the screen will revert to a clear page and this process will finally end with the piece of paper becoming crumpled and the words, ‘The End,’ appearing in the middle of it in black.. I may include text in this activity and if I do it will be developed through the computer or photo shop, however, the overall process used will be Stop –Motion.
